Does anyone have any experience with this malady?

Shouldn’t a vacuum suck the oil in?

The car isn’t worth much more than that so please don’t let anyone you know spend that kind of coin. Buy one with the L-5, too.

My google Kung-Fu is good today, assuming you are looking at a 2.5L jetta.

Isn’t the 2.5 an L-5? Do you have experience with this model? A colleague of mine has one she needs to sell and my ‘89 Camry’s heater core just failed for the second time and I think I’m at the tipping point with that car.

The pump generates vacuum for brake assist.

Thanks. I started searching it up right after I posted. My colleague has an ‘09 Jetta she needs to sell and I have an ‘89 Camry I think I’m a out to decommission.

Super common, they leak oil really badly down the back of the engine and hydrolock at worst . VW procedure has you taking the transmission out to replace it, but that’s completely unnecessary. That’s probably what they’re quoting. The pump itself is about $375 list .

$1500? I have a better idea

Yes, the 2.5 is the 5-banger. My SIL had one for 7 years, with a stick . Surprisingly reliable. Unfortunately as it approached 185k, the engine was getting weak and they traded it in.

My colleague has an ‘09 Jetta she needs to sell and is stuck on the $1500 quote WRT the value of the car. If I could have this car with 110k-ish miles in the $2000
-2500, should I consider it?

But it won’t fit in the Jetta.

Not with that attitude.

In my experience, that’s a normal VAG product experience.
Also note that the replacement part (if you have the 2.5L I5) is US$184-$266.
Is your Jetta manual? If it is, then according to Highlander-Mazeda’s link, it can be a DIY job.
If you have an automatic, well they recommend the transmission be removed... however that link also has a video on how to replace that part without removing the transmission.
This looks like
one of those jobs where it’s worthwhile to learn how to do some of your own wrenching.

Yeah but this is a VAG product we’re talking about.

I may consider buying this car and it would come discounted because of this ailment.

That said, there’s plenty of these out there that don’t need a $1,500 vacuum thingie

It depends on your budget. As long as the rest of the car is in good shape, then offer $2k and fix it and you’ll still have a good car at a good price. If you can DIY it, then you have a pretty good deal.

I forgot to mention... that part cost is from Rock Auto and doesn’t include shipping and tax.

I wouldn’t buy it, these Mk5 ’ s have all kinds of stupid problems as they age, and the automatic transmissions are made of glass (I’m assuming it’s Auto? Almost all are) . She should be able to find a much better repair quote for the vacuum pump at a good independent .

110,000 miles for $2000, but needs a “$1500 repair” which you can fix yourself for well under $500... I’ll give that a nice price provided there aren’t any other material issues. Even $2500 is probably still a Nice Price. Parts and service will be a bit more expensive than average... but that can be greatly mitigated by doing your own wrenching.
The 2.5L I5 is a nice engine.
I recently rented a 2014 Beetle with that engine and the 6 speed auto. The power and smoothness was what I expected. What I didn’t expect was the real world fuel economy that was slightly better compared to the manual 2L Ford Focus I had (about 7L/100km)
.
Better fuel economy in spite of having the automatic and an extra 32HP and being nicer sounding/smoother/quieter.

Changed one in my partner’s car. We got a very nice aftermarket one and it was quite simple replacement .

I’ve told my colleague I’m interested in the car. We’ll see what she’s willing to take for it from me.

I told her I could repair it for 1/3 that cost, which is true, with a genuine VW part. I was hoping all the glass and what have you would not be the case.

I’d like this to turn out to be a good thing. I like the coworker a lot and I hope I like the car and the price. We shall see...

Did you remove the pump cover and roll it over the automatic transmission gear selector post?
